The incident or activism movement in Ferguson was one of the historical movements regarding with races in the world. It gave great meaning of not only the position and the current status of black people in the United States but also those in the world as well. It was the far back moment that slavery was abolished in mid-19th century. However, this incident showed that there are still “unseen” racisms throughout the nation.
The incident was held in August 2014 when Michael Brown was shot and killed by Darren Wilson, a white police officer in Ferguson. I strongly believe that when people did something wrong or that should be punished, the officer then did the right thing for “offender.” On the other hand, I don’t want to say Michael Brown as “criminal” or any other word that is related with criminal. There are some witnesses that Michael Brown is not criminal. First, some witnesses claimed that Michael Brown never moved toward the officer when he was killed in the car. Also, other witnesses said Michael’s hands were in the air all times throughout the conversation between him and the officer. Michael was “too innocent” to be killed, and black society began to inflame toward the police and the government.
Black society “bombed” when court declared Michael as criminal. This was the incident when Ferguson became “the world of riot and rebellion.” It was not the only regional matter; whole nation went against the court’s decision, and there were many activism movements throughout the nation that were trying to mourn Michael’s death in Ferguson. All Americans were angry; they were out of control.
Throughout researches I did about Ferguson, I learned something interesting about black society. There are some people or can be majority of people who can think the territories that black people live are dangerous. However, I really want to say that this is totally biased view toward the black society, and this conception is totally segregative. The statistical research illustrated that Ferguson County, which embraces majority of black people in St. Louis, is one-third less dangerous than neighbor counties or even all counties throughout St. Louis. After I figured out these statistics, I questioned toward the long-lasted bias. Is Atlanta more dangerous than any other cities in the nation? Is Harlem the most dangerous territory than any other areas in the nation? Are all suburban areas safe?
I finally got answers from analyzing Ferguson area: no, no, no. I really want to say that the environment and the status of county or city matter, not the race of people. There are even cruel murders in the place where most of people believe as safe place. I think saying Atlanta and Harlem are dangerous because black people live is totally “stupid.” It is not just stupid, but it is very stupid. Black people did not get enough opportunities than many other people around the nation, and they want to survive. This is the reason why there are unfortunate incidents such as killing people, and this happens to all races.
I believed that the United States is characterized as “the land of equal opportunities for all people, regardless of races and gender.” However, this Ferguson shooting disapproved that it showed racism that is “still” present in the United States, and I was disappointed about this fact.
